Can Violent Movies Have An Affect On You?

Entertainment has been an evolving thing from generation to generation. Theater with live actors and audiences was a form of entertainment for the early Greeks, for England (think William Shakespeare) and places around the world. In the conquests of the Romans, there frequently seems to be an amphitheater type building or area built where there were good acoustics showing these early conquerors valued getting their mind of the day to day conqueroring, and getting some entertainment. In the Wild West of the early United States, there were theaters, restaurants, and saloons, offering music and various types of shows. Entertainment has been with us in similar forms but different levels from generation to generation.
Protecting Your Heart (That’s Your Soul)
Different shows depict different situations and different stories. What you watch will inevitably have an affect on what you think, believe, and do. Proverbs 4:23 tells us to protect our hearts. That means we be very careful about what we listen to and watch. What we think in our hearts (specifically, your soul which is your mind, will, and emotions). Yes, watching violence has an affect on you. Different people are affected differently.
It’s Not Real, It’s Just Acting
People watch a violent video, movie, or film and say, “It’s just acting”, or “It doesn’t affect me”. If you say that, you are just deceiving yourself. You may not become a murderer after watching a video but the seeds of violence have been planted in your mind (remember you are a three part being read more here. What you get in your soul will affect what you think, say, and do.
What Jesus Christ Says About What You Watch
The Lord Jesus teaches us that we have to be really careful about what we watch (and hear). In Matthew 5:28 Jesus Christ teaches us that if we look at the man or a woman and sexually desire them, then it is just as if we have had sex with them. Is it the same for violence and watching it? Remember that our world was wiped clear by God once before due to its violence according to Genesis 6:13. Unbelievers are violent (2 Timothy 3:3), not believers. We are to be loving and good like God.
If you are a believer, a follower of Jesus and Child of the Most High God, then you will find that when the world is running in one direction, we are moving in the other direction. A famous business man turned preacher, Charles Capps, said your spirit is like photo film, whatever you expose it to will develop there (in you). We must really be careful what we expose our soul to.
It is really a bad idea to watch things that depict violence, whether acted out or real. It is something that damages your conscience. Watch a lot of swearing and cursing, you will start swearing and cursing. Watch a lot of kicking and punching, you’re going to become more open to kick and punching. Simply put, WHAT YOU THINK IS WHAT YOU BECOME. Just because you watch a murder doesn’t mean you will become a murderer. However, there are many people in society that are easily influenced in the wrong direction.
