What Are The Two Types of Christians?

People around the globe will say they are Christian when they are asked. But are they? They may not go to a church regularly, they may talk like a devil, they may even steal and cheat others… but continue to say they are a ‘Christian’ because that is the culture they associate with. To avoid confusion, there is a very easy way to identify someone by two simple classifications. There are two types of Christians from a very high level view. The two types are

  • Cultural Christian
  • Committed Christian

What is the difference between a Cultural And A Committed Christian?

A cultural Christian is someone who labels themself as somehow related to Jesus Christ or some particular ‘Christian’ church group or denomination, but their lifestyle is nearly identical to an unbeliever. Many times worse because some even tend to be hypocritical (do what I say, not what I do). In fact, sometimes unbelievers can have more integrity than these ‘cultural Christians’. A cultural Christian generally does not believe the Bible to be the infallible Word of God as they do not act on what the Bible teaches.

Cultural Christians’ examples of daily life are often used by unbelievers to justify not believing in God. Many unbelievers say, I would believe in God but so and so says they are a ‘Christian’ and they do wrong.

Obviously, your relationship with God is between you and God and all people will be judged whether they acknowledged and served Jesus or rejected Him. Everyone’s eternal destination, Heaven or hell, will be decided by them while they are on this earth. It is up or down and it is your choice.

A Committed Christian?

The other high level type of Christian is the committed Christian. A committed Christian is someone who has acknowledged Jesus Christ as God and following the teaching of His Word (the Bible). Of course there are various groups of Christians (denominations) in the world today. The good news is that you just have to have a relationship with God through Jesus (Romans 10:9) in order to continue on to Heaven when your spirit and soul depart your body (check out Humans, A Three Part Being here). Just as there are various styles of music there are different types of committed Christians. To continue the analogy some like jazz, others like rock music but it’s all music. The fundamental to being a true Christian is believing God and following Jesus. From there you’ve got the people that are more into tradition and those who are full Gospel and believe for and receive signs, wonders, and miracles in their lives.

In fact, when the Lord Jesus was asked by the religious people of the time about God (in Matthew 22:37-40), He showed through the scriptures that people need to love God first, and love people as well. If you love God, it’s so easy to love others because you know what God did for you. If everyone would follow these guidelines the world would truly be a better place. In fact, the world would be like heaven. Unfortunately, while we are on this earth there are those who reject God outright or go to some false religion that denies Jesus as God or completely ignore. This completely denies the inbuilt desire to know God. The result is eternal separation from God… also known as hell, which is filled with nasty people who also rejected Jesus as their Redeemer (the only one that can make them right.

What Does God Think About You?

God loves every one of us in the world. The Almighty wants to have a personal relationship with you! If you are committed to Him, he will be committed to you (1 Samuel 2:30, James 4:8). The first step ALWAYS starts with you. A committed Christian is a solid, Bible-teaching, God-loving church every week. They daily pray, read their Bible, and are blessed in all that they do because God is with them.

If you are a cultural Christian, it is time to come out of it. It’s time to get committed. There is a chance that you may not be heading to Heaven if there is no commitment or relationship with the Most High God. After all, the Lord Jesus said that many will say they know him but Jesus says in Matthew 7:21 that many will declare themselves Christians (Jesus people, followers of Christ), but He will tell them He does not know them. Why? These people are cultural Christians. Are you a cultural Christian or a committed Christian? Will God receive you when you depart your body or will He say be gone, I don’t know you? The choice is yours.
