What Is The PSALM Model For Powerful Prayer?
Jesus teaches us how to talk with God the Father, to pray. In fact many Jesus people call it “The Lord’s Prayer” which is what Jesus Christ teaches us in Matthew 6:9-13. Many quote it verbatim as a prayer and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, when the Lord Jesus, God incarnate (in the flesh) taught us to pray in this way, what exactly was He saying? He was actually teaching us the model for praying.. talking with God. There is an enhancement to that model that is easy to remember. It teaches us to pray, it’s called the PSALM model for prayer, P-S-A-L-M. What exactly is this model that affirms the Lord’s Prayer? You take each letter of the word and create a new word, an acrostic. Here is a great way to enter your prayer time each day using the P-S-A-L-M model.
Praise– When you start your prayer time, the way to start it is with praise. Praise Him and thank Him out loud. Speak it out. Thank God for all that He has done for you. Psalm 100:4 tells us to enter God’s presence with praise and thanksgiving. Praise Him! Then move on to-
Surrender– After you’ve praised God for your family, your health, His goodness, and His mercy it’s really easy to begin to surrender those areas in your life that you are trying to work out by your own physical or mental power. In Isaiah 40:31, we are told that those who wait on the Lord renew their strength. So would that also mean those who do NOT wait on the Lord God do NOT renew their strength? Yes. Whatever you have going on that you are stressing about, give it to God and quit trying to do things without Him. Next it could be time to-
Ask– Most people think of prayer of asking God for stuff. But prayer is not asking, it’s fellowshipping with the most high God. It’s spending time with Him. Who want a kid who just comes and only asks for things? By starting with praising God and surrendering you you get into the place where you actually know what to ask according to God’s Word. In fact, the Lord God Jesus tells us in Mark 11:24 that we can ask for anything and have it. That is power praying!
Listen– You have praised, you have surrendered, you have asked God according to His will (1 John 5:14-15) and you are going deeper with God in your time with Him. Now it’s time to be quiet. If you’re prayer starts with just going into your ‘prayer closet’ and listening you may fall asleep that’s where the P-S-A comes in. Prayer is getting out of the physical thinking and connecting to the Spirit. In fact, Jesus tells us that knowing God is not a physical thing. Knowing God is worshipping God in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Worship is telling God that only He is worthy and lifting Him up in our lives. Our spirit connects with God’s spirit and we hear from Him.
Meditate– After you have been listening to God it’s time to think about what He has said to you. The majority of the world has no communication with God. They chant, they do festivals, they do everything but talk to the Most High God. When you learn to power pray He will speak to you, but you have to ‘digest’ what He’s said as well. Spend time meditating or ‘thinking about’ what has spoken to you.
Using the P-S-A-L-M model for your daily prayer is powerful. It is exactly taking that Lord’s Prayer model and putting it into practice. As you spend your time with God each day, use this prayer model and watch your prayer time become more effective and powerful as you connect with the Most High God.
Do you have God’s power in your daily life?
