What Does The Bible Say About Loaning People Money?

When it comes to people asking for money, that ‘usually never ends well’ is the best thing to keep in mind. Pastors have the toughest job in the world, because their work is multiplied by the number of people in their church family.   Frequently, people will head to a church asking for money.  Of course, churches are here to help people, but their most important contribution is to get people helped spiritually.  If you are in good shape spiritually, you will be in good shape physically whether that is in health, mental acuity, or even in your finances. A new pastor will quickly learn that unbelievers will come to the church to take advantage of our love and generosity.  If you start giving guests money, you will begin getting a steady stream of people looking for a hand out.

It is the same for believers.  People will come to you asking to borrow money.  When it comes to giving, Proverbs 19:17 (NKJV) says,

He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD,

And He will pay back what he has given.

Giving is a good thing.  After all, you can’t take anything with you when you depart this world. .  There are several types of giving, one area is giving to man (people), the other areas are to God.  Learn more about the four types of giving here.  It is good to be generous and loving.  However, most of the time when people start asking you for money, it leads to trouble.  The Bible says in 1 John 3:17, that we should have pity, or compassion, on those who are in need.  One big thing to note is it says, ‘when you see a brother [or sister] in need’.  We are to take care of fellow Jesus people, fellow Christians.  That does not mean we should not help unbelievers, in fact loving unbelievers is one way of sharing your faith and God’s goodness (Philemon 1:6).

What Should You Do When People Ask For Money?

When people ask you for money, you should ask God for wisdom (James 1:6) on whether to give or not; or if you are to give, ask how much to sow into their lives.  If you sense that is just someone trying to milk you of some finances, it is okay to say no.  Your biggest responsibility is taking care of you and your family. Secondly, there may be someone in your local church family that needs a financial injection at a difficult time in their life. It is probably good to keep in mind that if you loan people money, think of it as a gift not a loan. You will, in most cases, never see those funds again.

The Bible is very clear that money is a tool.  Why not use it for good?  The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and we must remember that the love of money can be a problem with those who have lots of wealth as well as those who have nothing.  If we love the Lord, the Bible gives us a lot of promises about how to get more money.   (Check out, What Is The Prosperity Gospel?)   The more you bless others, the more God will bless you.

Have You Been Ripped Off?

You may have been ripped off by someone asking to borrow money.  If it happens once shows that it is their issue, if you get ripped off a second time by the same person, now it is your issue.  Jesus people (Christians) are generous but we’re not foolish.  If you have been ripped off by someone, do not let them do it to you again.  It is okay to say no to people that are bad ground to sow into (Mark 4:20).  You are just wasting your financial ‘seed’ if you do not have the Holy Spirit leading to give.  If you are going to give into someone’s life, make sure to have a bit of wisdom before you give.

Giving can often be a sudden thing.  Requests can come quickly out of the blue.  If you want to avoid feeling like you wasted your financial seed or have been ripped off, the best thing is to be in tune with God and His direction EVERY day.  After all, Romans 8:14 says that those who are led by the Spirit of God are the Sons of God.  Be a son (whether you are male or female) of God and in tune with His leading.  How do you do it?  By following the FIVE THINGS every Christian can do each day to be strong
