What Jewish Holidays And Traditions Does The Lord Jesus Christ Teach Christians To Observe?

Jewish Traditions

Religions of the world observe many holidays and traditions. Some are written in their guidelines and others are just traditions passed down from generation to generation.

The Bible is the most powerful book you can get your hands on. We see what it does in Hebrews 4:12. It is made up of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament shows where mankind is without God and the Old Covenant that the Jewish people had to observe. In the Old Testament, the blood of animals was used to cover the sin of mankind before God. Hebrews 10:4 tells us that the blood of animals cannot remove the sins of humans. Animals’ blood just covered the sins of the people. We needed the sins removed.

Jesus Christ (the Anointed One) came and eliminated the division of God and man for people who wanted to know God. The Lord Jesus Christ makes righteous (rectifies or makes right) those who confess and follow Him (Romans 10:9). He died and shed His blood to make us right before God. The New Testament abolishes the Old Covenant or old way of doing things. Jesus Christ establishes the New Covenant which he touches on in Luke 22:20. With God, the new is always better than the old.

Christians Celebrating Jewish Traditions
There are churches and Christians that are ‘Jewish crazy’. They celebrate different Jewish holidays such as Passover, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah and others. They make a lot of effort to wear the attire, blow the shofars (ram’s horn), and eat the Old Testament prescribed foods. Is there anything wrong with this? Of course not.

The Lord Jesus does not require Christian Kingdom people to observe Jewish or Israeli holidays or traditions in order to be saved or walk with God. However, for some Christians it can become a considerable distraction as the Lord Jesus never taught us to observe these holidays as they are Old Testament and Old Covenant. Following culture or traditions is not what God teaches. Our commission is to preach the New Testament, in fact we are to reach, preach, and teach to the nations, in fact that is our Great Commission.

Enjoying learning a bit about ancient Judaism is educational, but it is not what Christians are supposed to be focused on. In Acts, early Christianity was called ‘the Way’. Why? Being a follower of Jesus is a departure from the old and entrance into the new eternal life that He promised us in abundance (John 10:10). Don’t let anything distract you from that calling.
