Are There Different Types Of Unbelief In The Bible?

In the Bible, we see that people who believe see miracles, signs, and wonders.  Those who do not believe are blocking themselves from getting a miracle and much more.  Why?

Believing is faith.  Hebrews 11:1 says, faith has substance and when you have faith in God’s Word (the Bible) then something is going to happen, God can work.  In our age, God has given the control of the earth over to men, in turn we lost control to the enemy in the Garden.    Upon resurrecting from the dead, Jesus told those of us who believe that all power, literally ‘all authority’ has been given to us.  The enemy is constantly trying to use people to steal that authority from believers.  A Christian without faith is like a rocket without fuel, it won’t go far.

Faith Is Believing God And His Word

Believing, faith, is so important to God.  It is so mandatory that Hebrews 11:6 says that a person without faith is a person who cannot please God.  However, a person with faith not only pleases God but is abundantly rewarded in health, strength, finances, relationships… God wants to reward His children but we can only receive His rewards in accordance with our faith.  In fact, the rewards (blessings) God puts on us are determined by the size of our faith.

Two Types of Unbelief

In the Bible, we know faith is a requirement for any believer to be strong.  We also know that many people will not be in heaven due to unbelief.  There are two types of unbelief in the Bible.  Unbelief in

  1. Ignorance
  2. Arrogance

In 1 Timothy 1:12-13, we see Paul lamenting on the persecution he did of the Way, followers of Jesus, the early church.  He arrested, imprisoned, beat, and if had some followers of Jesus killed because they refused to give in to religious hypocrisy and renounce their faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Here he admits that he did it in ignorance.  His unbelief was in ignorance.  Jesus Himself set Paul (Saul at that time) straight on the road to Damascus.  Paul was forgiven and made right when He turned to follow Jesus.  However, it took people awhile to trust him despite that life changing experience.

The second type of unbelief is that of arrogance.  In Numbers 13:33, we see that Israeli’s sent spies into the promised land that God had given them.  Most of those men sent to scout out the land came back with a negative and unbelieving report.  While Caleb in Numbers 13:30 had already said, let’s go claim the land God had promised of us!  When the details are recounted in Hebrews 3:7-11, we see that these people had an evil heart of unbelief.  They had already decided what they were not believing.  They weren’t walking by faith, but they were walking by fear and their natural instincts.  This is unbelief in arrogance as they had the promise but rejected it.

Walk By The Spirit

Unbelief is a dead end for anyone who wants to know God.  2 Corinthians 5:7 tells us to walk by faith and not by what we see in front of us.  Stop being carnal (living by how or what you feel or see), start being spiritual!  Those who are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  It’s time to get out of unbelief and get into Jesus!
