How Can I Pray For Unsaved Family Members?
There is nothing like truly knowing God. When you accept Jesus, your eyes are opened and you see what you didn’t see as an unbeliever. Getting the baptism on the Holy Spirit makes it even more real. We get saved in the Name of by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The power of the Holy Spirit in us helps gives us all special gifts ( learn more about the gifts of the Holy Spirit here).
Our desire as a believer is to see others come to God through the resurrection power of Jesus. Of course, we want our friends to come to Jesus and be free from sin. However, the biggest desire of most believers is to see their whole family saved. How do we get our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children, grand parents, cousins and whole clan saved?
Praying For Family
Many of us used to pray things like, “ Father, please save ________ (fill the name in the blank”. Is that prayer really scriptural? Actually, no. Of course, God wants the person saved. Does the Bible teach us how to pray for our family? Yes!
We know from 1 Timothy 2:4, that God’s desire is that all people come to Him and believe in Him to receive their gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. When we pray for God to save someone, we’re praying a useless prayer. Of course, we already know from God’s Word (the Bible) that He wants all men and women saved.
How Do I Pray For Family Members?
In John 6:44, the Lord Jesus tells us that no one comes to the Father unless the Father draws him. We know that when Jesus resurrected He came back as a man in a resurrected body and spent time before He ascended to Heaven (He’s coming back soon). He told us that a Comforter (the Holy Spirit) will come in John 16:7. So who is on the earth with us now of the Godhead (trinity)? The Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit? The answer is the Holy Spirit! We have to know the Holy Spirit.
How To Pray
If you want to pray for unsaved family members or friends, you should pray Biblically because those are the prayers that work. We are to pray to the Father in Jesus’ Name according to John 16:23, 24. You can pray something like this
Father, in the Name of Jesus I pray your Holy Spirit draw _________ (fill in the name) to You. Wherever they go, whatever they do, surround them with Spirit-filled Christians that know Your love and know You power. Father, I thank you that you are smarter than any human. Let them see Your undeniable love for them each day. I call them into the Kingdom and into enternal life right now, in the Mighty NAME of JESUS!
You only really need to pray this prayer once. After that, it’s time to walk by faith. How should you pray for those unsaved? Faith is believing, so once you’ve said it and believed it, then you can pray something like
Father, I thank you for drawing _____________ (fill in the name) to you. I stand in the gap for them and thank You for their salvation. I stand on Acts 16:31 that says, me and my household shall be saved.
Every time you think about your family member or friend, just thank God for His Holy Spirit that is drawing them and the eternal life they have. That is faith, speaking what you expect, not what you have.
You are God’s hands and feet. As you pray scripturally things happen. James 5:16 says the prayers of the righteous (the strong faith Christian) avails much… does a lot! Praise God!
Do you have God’s power in your daily life?
