Can Bad Lyrics In Music Affect A Person?

Listening to music is a wonderful way to enjoy life every day.  There are some great songs out there that remind us of a time in life, of people, or situations we were going though.  At the same time, there are some very bad songs that we would probably not listen to if we were sitting in front of God the Father or Jesus for that matter.

What Affect Does Music Have On Us?

Music can affect our moods.  People are accustomed to a certain type of music in a coffee shop, another type at a supermarket, and yet different music at a restaurant.  Music can set the mood.  Christians must realize that what you listen to is really important.  The music played in a church worship service can draw you into God’s amazing presence, or it can completely distract you from entering in.

A  hundred year old company making musical instruments and sound systems from Japan says just playing music can set the tone for a person or environment.  Many songs are written as poems with great stories or inspiring words, while other songs are meaningless repetitions or can even filled with obscenities and be vulgar.

What About The Lyrics?

“I like the music but I don’t listen to the words” is a common statement about these songs with great musical melodies but bad lyrics.  Can words in songs affect you?  Absolutely!

When you play a song, you are not just getting the instruments, you are exposing your spirit to the lyrics as well.  You may not be concentrating on what is being sung but your subconscious is and those words are taking seed in you.  Proverbs 4:23 tells us to protect our hearts.  Our hearts are our soul (mind, will emotions) and spirit. The way things get to us is through the entrances to our heart, your eyes, ears, and even nose.

If you listen to bad music, it will affect you.  Your heart is like the old photo film, whatever you expose it to, will develop there.

Exposing Yourself To God

If you want to want to walk in God’s power in your everyday life, you must fill yourself up with good things… God things. In fact, Philippians 4:8 tells us to think about things that are good and pure. Why?  God is good, pure, perfect, and light.  Music is great, but we need to carefully listen to the words and even filter what singers we listen to.  The enemy uses music to mess up and confuse people.  Even some Christian songs can be unscriptural.  One Christian praise song sings “Blessed is the Name of the Lord”, then continues to sing about how “God gives and takes away”.  Those who know James 1:17 know that every good and perfect gift from God.  He doesn’t take anything away.

Make A Decision

Know Jesus, be filled His Holy Spirit and power by being baptized in the Spirit.  Then be careful what music you are listening to.  Listen to music that builds you up and encourages you.  If you wouldn’t listen to it in front of children or God, you should switch to something else.  There is a lot of God music out there, but even the music branded as ‘Christian’ should be filtered.  Turn off the junk and just play the music that builds you up.  Then when trouble comes, your heart will be filled with songs.  Ephesians 5:19 tells us to be filled with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.  You will wake up with your spirit singing and experience a high that only the Most High Father can give.

Rock on brothers and sisters!
