Does The Bible Say, We Really Need To Give Tithes And Offerings To Our Church?
What exactly is the tithe (also known as our ‘firstfruits’)? What is the purpose of the tithe and what does our giving accomplish? By giving our first fruits to God, we are honoring God and putting Him first place in our life. We are acknowledging who God is, and what He does in our lives. When you think about it, everything you have here will stay here when you go to be with the Father. Let’s explore what the purpose of the tithe is.
Malachi 3:10 says we should give, “so that there may be food in My house”. Our tithes feed the ministry of the local church. Food is for feeding the pastors and ministers who feed us every week and encourage us. In our day it goes further, the tithe feeds the ministers and their families, pays for the facility it maintenance and operation (rents, electricity, insurance, etc.). Note that the tithe is for His house.
Tithing is not giving some money to the poor when someone feels like it. That’s giving alms. The church is more effective in ministering to the needs of its area than an individual can ever be and should be doing things to feed the believers that may be in financial or physical need.
Hebrews 11:6 says, without faith it is impossible to please God. Those who believe and act are pleasing to God and will be rewarded we are promised. When you give believe and expect, by faith, that you will be blessed.
Active ‘tithers’ are walking in God’s will. When we are walking in God’s will we can experience the overflow. However, living in this world is not always easy. The enemy comes in and tries to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10) in our lives. When we are walking in God’s will and strong faith, we are walking in power…God’s power. It is like a hedge, or force field, around us. It’s the shield of faith Ephesians 6 talks about.
Giving is God’s plan. He gave His Son, a part of Himself, to die on our behalf and make us right before God. When you give you
- Acknowledge Him in everything we have.
- Support His ministry here on the earth through His Church and reach more people.
- Get the laws of sowing and reaping working in your life so we can be a blessing to others.
So, why should a believer give? We should give because God wants us to be cheerful givers just as He is. The more you are faithful with what you have been entrusted, the more you will have entrusted to you. Give and it will come back to you (Luke 6:38). But don’t let it stop at tithes and offerings. Give love, encouragement, a good word, give to others! Then watch the Lord bless you abundantly above all you can ever ask or think.
