What Is Palm Sunday?
We hear a lot about holidays. As a Christian, we know Easter (also known as Resurrection Day) is three days after Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross in Jerusalem around AD 33 as documented by the Bible and secular historians such as Josephus. Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to His friends and followers who were still in shock as we see in Luke Chapter 24.
One week before Jesus was crucified, Jesus came into Israel’s ancient capital Jerusalem. People were so excited when He came in. He came in as prophesied in Zechariah 9:9 by the prophet Zechariah on riding on the back of a small colt, a small donkey. The Israeli people were excited that the Messiah was coming because they thought He was going to bring a political worldly Kingdom. Little did they know that King Jesus was bringing something even greater. Jesus was bringing the Kingdom of God to those who believed and eternal life for all who believe and receive.
That day people recognized that something amazing was happening. They took off their jackets and looked for things to lay down on the road before Him. Many cut branches off palm trees as John 12:13 says,
…took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
“Hosanna!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
The King of Israel!”
This day is known as Palm Sunday, or the Triumphant Entry. Just a few days later the religious people turned many against King Jesus as they were doing the will of the forces of hell. A few evil people were able to convince the political leadership of the time to crucify Jesus. If they would have known what they were doing, they would have certainly stopped. Praise God, Jesus died for you and I and although the crucifixion looked liked defeat after the triumphant entry, the resurrection was total and complete victory for everyone who believes and receives Jesus.
