What Is Praying In The Spirit? Tongues?

In Acts chapter 2, the church that Jesus spoke about in Matthew 16:18 came into being.  The first thing that happened was they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and they spoke with other tongues.  What are these tongues?

Learn From Those Who Have Experience

Tongues are a language that you have not studied nor learned.  Speaking in tongues is the entryway in the gifts of the Spirit operating in your life and church as described in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.  Many people who have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit describe the gift of tongues as God giving you the ability to converse in an earthly language with others.  Don’t listen to people’s explanations about tongues if they have not received the gift.  Would you want to learn from someone who has never flown an airplane on how to fly plane?  Of course not.  We need to ask those who are experiencing to get the true story.

Tongues are not conversational.  They are given by God to glorify Himself and bring power to the believer.  Who do tongues bring power to the believer?  It’s called praying in the Spirit.  Romans 8:26 talks about praying in the Spirit.  Praying in the spirit is praying in tongues despite not knowing what are mouths are saying.  Many believers pray this way every day.  There are two types of tongues, a heavenly language or an earthly language.  In Acts 2:6-8 we see the new church started by uneducated followers of Jesus who were speaking in various languages they had not learned and glorifying God.

Praying In The Spirit

As you pray in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit speaks to you about what’s going on in your life. You mind is open but you are saying those things that come to you in tongues.  When you pray in the Spirit, 1 Corinthians 14:14 tells us our spirit is praying.  That’s how Romans 8:28 can say we know all things work for good when we’re praying in the Spirit. In the English Bible, spirit is the English version of “pneuma”.  Based on the context of the passage, we can conclude whether we are talking about the human spirit or the Holy Spirit.  A committed Christian is a new creation when they are saved according to 2 Corinthians 5:17.  Our spirit connects with the Holy Spirit in praying in the Spirit. It is our human spirit connecting with God’s Holy Spirit.

How To Pray In Spirit

Get around people that are filled with the Spirit.  You can tell by how they pray.  You will sense such power and peace as they pray.  Make sure you are baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit.  Then as you spend time with God, pray in tongues.  Just let loose in your place of prayer.  As you pray listen for God’s direction through the Holy Spirit.  Have a blank sheet of paper and write down those things that the Holy Spirit speaks to you.  You will never be the same.
