Are Natural Disasters, Storms, Hurricanes, Floods, and Earthquakes, Acts Of God?

If you’ve ever read a legal agreement in some English-speaking countries, you’ll find some people defining natural disasters such as floods, famines, fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, and other tragedies as ‘acts of God’.  Is God the cause of natural disasters?

Getting It Straight

Let’s get the terminology correct.  If God loves the world (John 3:16), why would He try to destroy His creation.  The legal term ‘act of God’ must always be changed to ‘act of nature’ because God is good not evil.  Even though God is good, when hurricane season starts in the Caribbean area or some other events take place, some people begin to say it is the ‘judgment of God’.  Really?

Age Of The Law, Age Of Grace

In the Old Testament of the Bible, God has reigned down judgment at certain times. The sexual sin of Sodom and Gomorrah is world famous.  Many people lost their lives due to homosexual sin.  We must remember this was during the age of the Law.  Jesus had not been born into the Earth as a man yet to usher in the Age of Grace.  We live in the Age of Grace. If you are not praying, whatever happens in your life is just the luck of the draw.  It’s just chance.  You do not want to live like a leaf blowing around in the ocean.  Jesus teaches us to pray so we can change our circumstances and fulfill God’s calling for our lives.

Natural Disasters Are Natural

Natural disasters are not God’s judgment.  They are caused by varying weather patterns and the movement of the earth that we live on.  Disasters are also caused by choices of people we share the earth with.  That does not mean believers are helpless.  God speaks to our spirits by His Holy Spirit and will warn us of impending disasters so we can escape.  He also empowers us to deal with the weather.  Remember Jesus spoke to the storm in Mark 4:39 saying to the wind, “Peace Be Still!”.  The weather obeyed Him and the storm stopped.  Jesus gave us the same authority saying, “Greater works shall you do [than I] because I go to the Father” in John 14:12.  You can command the tornado to go the other direction, and it will obey you.  You can pray away the rain, and it will go.  All you need to do is know Jesus and believe that what He promises you can do, you CAN do!

Don’t fall to the Dark Ages Mentality that says everything is in God’s hands.  It’s not. You are God’s hands and you are God’s feet on the earth while you are here.  If you don’t do it, who will?
