What’s The Difference Between Faith And The Holy Spirit’s Gift Of Faith?
We know from Hebrews 11:1 that faith is expectation and it has substance. We know from Mark 11:22-25 that when you want to activate your faith for something, you need to say it and not doubt. We also all understand from Romans 10:17 that faith comes from hearing and reading the Word of God (the Bible). In 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, we hear about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and faith. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are for all believers. We see the gift of tongues is entryway into the gifts of the Spirit and is for ALL believers. But there is also prophecy, healing, discernment and others.
What is This Faith Mixed With The Gifts Of The Spirit?
In 1 Corinthians 12:9 we see that faith is named as a gift of the Holy Spirit just along there with tongues, discerning of spirits, and prophecy. We know from the above that faith is something that we each have to have, so what’s this gift of faith?
You must have the BASE FAITH to have the gift of faith operate in your life. The gift of faith is something that doesn’t come from you. Of course, believers must life by faith by the Holy Spirit will add on your faith to do something above and beyond what you could do by your own believing. A great example is in Matthew 14:22 when Peter is walking on the water. He couldn’t do it on his own, but the gift of faith helped him to do so through Jesus. Now it is the Holy Spirit that gives us all our spiritual gifts.
In Acts 8:4-8, we see another example of a gift of faith with Philip. He sees an Ethiopian man reading the Bible in his chariot and senses the Holy Spirit telling him to share the gospel of Jesus with him. He steps out in faith and not only does the guy accept Jesus but he also gets baptized. Praise God!
Faith is a must for every believer. You have to live by your faith otherwise you’ll die by your fear. God doesn’t want us to be anxious or worried about anything. He wants you to be filed with faith. There are times when you will need to power up your faith, those are the time when the gift of faith or special faith will come to you.
